One of the most important personalities in the history of Rome is Julius Caesar.

A brilliant military general, strategist, and politician, Caesar played a key role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.

He expanded Rome’s territories through his campaigns, especially in Gaul (modern-day France), and became immensely popular with the people. His rise to power, however, alarmed the Senate. In 49 BCE, he famously crossed the Rubicon River with his army, defying the Senate and sparking a civil war.

Caesar’s rule brought major reforms, but his growing power and the fear of dictatorship led to his assassination in 44 BCE by a group of senators, including some he considered allies.

His legacy shaped the future of Rome—his adopted heir, Octavian (later Augustus), became the first Roman Emperor. Today, Julius Caesar remains a symbol of ambition, political change, and the complex relationship between power and democracy.

Taking a taxi in Rome can be convenient , but there are a few things you should know to avoid common pitfalls.

Here are eight tips for using taxis in the city:

🚕 Use Official Taxis – Always take an official white taxi with a « TAXI » sign on the roof and a license number on the doors.

🚕 Avoid unlicensed drivers who approach you at stations or tourist spots.

🚕 Taxi Stands Over Hailing – In Rome, taxis don’t usually stop if you hail them on the street. Instead, go to a designated taxi stand (« posteggio taxi »), which you’ll find near major squares, train stations, and landmarks.

🚕 Call for a Taxi or Use an App – If you can’t find a stand, call a taxi service like +39 060609 (Rome’s official taxi line) or use apps like FreeNow or itTaxi. Uber exists but mainly offers luxury services.

🚕 Check the Meter – The meter should start at a fixed base fare (€3 during the day, €4.50 at night , €5.50 on Sundays). Make sure it’s running to avoid being overcharged.

🚕 Fixed of Flat Fares – There are fixed fares from Fiumicino Airport (€50) and Ciampino Airport (€31) to the city centre. No extra fees should be added for luggage or passengers.

🚕 Expect Extra Charges – Taxis charge extra for night rides (10 PM–6 AM), rides on holidays, and trips to major train stations. Also, booking a taxi by phone adds a small fee.

🚕 Pay with Cash or Card – Most taxis now accept credit cards, but it’s safer to ask before you start your ride. Some drivers may claim their machine is « broken » to get cash.

🚕 Get a Receipt – Always ask for a printed receipt (« ricevuta ») in case you forget something or need to dispute a charge. It will include the taxi’s license number.

According to Roman mythology, the city of Rome was founded by twin brothers Romulus and Remus, sons of the god Mars and the vestal virgin Rhea Silvia.

Abandoned as infants and left to die by the Tiber River, they were miraculously saved and nursed by a she-wolf in a cave known as the Lupercal.

Later, the twins were raised by a shepherd and eventually decided to build a city where they had been rescued. However, a disagreement over who would rule the new city led Romulus to kill Remus. Romulus then became the sole founder and first king of Rome in 753 BCE.

The legend symbolizes Rome’s divine origins, its strength born from struggle, and the importance of destiny and power in its foundation. It remains one of the most powerful myths in Roman identity.

The Trevi Fountain, or Fontana di Trevi, is one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks.

Standing at 85 feet high and 160 feet wide, it is the city’s largest Baroque fountain. Designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732 and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, the fountain features a central figure of Oceanus, the god of the sea, riding a shell-shaped chariot pulled by sea horses and guided by Tritons. Flanking Oceanus are statues representing Abundance and Health.

The fountain marks the terminal point of the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct, constructed in 19 BC, which supplied water to ancient Rome. Its name, “Trevi,” derives from “trivium,” meaning the intersection of three roads.

A popular tradition associated with the Trevi Fountain is the coin toss: throwing a coin over your left shoulder with your right hand is said to ensure a return to Rome.

The fountain has also been featured in various films, most notably Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” (1960).

In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year, the Trevi Fountain underwent a significant restoration to remove dirt, pollution, and limescale, ensuring it continues to captivate visitors with its grandeur and historical significance.

Ostia Antica is a stunningly preserved ancient Roman city—one of the best in Italy.

With you English Mother-Tongue guide, we will bring the ancient city to life as we pick our way through 2000-year-old apartment complexes, visit a bygone restaurant, and learn about bizarre religious cults.

Why Ostia Antica instead of Pompeii?

There are three reasons, 1) Ostia it’s much closer and easier to visit (25-minute train ride); 2) Ostia is a better example of a real, working class town than Pompeii; 3) visiting Ostia has a lower carbon footprint than visiting Pompeii, and given the crowds at the latter and general “undiscovered” feeling of the former, it’s a more enjoyable, enriching experience.

We begin our Ostia Antica Tour in Rome, at Piramide Metro B station, with a short 25 minutes train ride toward the Mediterranean sea.

Along the way, I will discuss the regional geography of the area, Ostia’s role as Rome’s port, and the historic background leading up to the town’s rise in the Imperial era. On site, we will spend 2,5 hours combing through the ruins, which include some of the best examples of baths, a fantastic amphitheater, and several Mithraic temples, not to mention a forum with temples.

The Basilica of Saints John and Paul in Rome dates back to the 4th century and actually began as a secret home for Christian worship—back when Christianity was still illegal.

One of its highlights is the stunning Cosmatesque floor, a mosaic style created by the Cosmati family and used in many Roman churches. It’s so iconic that you’ll rarely find it outside of Italy—except in one surprising place: Westminster Abbey in London!

The Pope once sent Cosmati craftsmen there as a gesture of unity with King Henry VIII... we all know how that turned out.

Beneath Rome’s Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini lies the Capuchin Crypt, a haunting yet profound testament to mortality.

Constructed in the 17th century, this crypt houses the remains of approximately 3,700 Capuchin friars, their bones meticulously arranged into intricate designs—chandeliers, arches, and symbols—across six small chapels.

Each chamber, like the Crypt of the Skulls and the Crypt of the Three Skeletons, offers a unique reflection on life’s transience. A poignant inscription reads: “What you are now, we once were; what we are now, you shall be.”

🚇 Book High-Speed Trains in Advance – For long-distance travel on Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, or Italo trains, book tickets early to get lower prices. Prices rise closer to departure.

🚇 Validate Regional Train Tickets – If you’re taking a regional train (Trenitalia’s Regionale or Intercity) and have a paper ticket , you must validate it in the green/yellow machines at the station before boarding to avoid fines.

🚇 Use Apps for Booking – Apps like Trenitalia, Italo, and Omio allow you to check schedules, book tickets, and store e-tickets, avoiding the need for paper copies.
Know the Difference Between Train Types - Frecciarossa/Frecciargento/ Frecciabianca = High-speed trains (fast but more expensive). Intercity (IC) = Slower but cheaper for medium-distance travel. Regionale (R) and Regionale Veloce (RV) = Local trains (cheapest , but slow and may not have AC).

🚇 Be Mindful of Strikes – Train strikes (“sciopero”) happen frequently in Italy, often announced in advance. Check Trenitalia’s website or local news before your trip.

🚇 Watch for Platform Changes – Platforms can change last minute, so keep an eye on departure boards (“Partenze”) at the station and listen for announcements.

🚇 Pack Light for Easy Travel – Luggage space on regional trains is limited. On high-speed trains, larger bags go in racks near the doors, so keep valuables with you.

🚇 Validate Eurail or Interrail Passes Before First Use – If you’re using a rail pass, you must activate it at a ticket counter before your first journey to avoid fine.

Do you know the story of Palatine Hill?

An interesting piece of Rome’s history is connected to Palatine Hill, one of the city’s seven hills and considered the birthplace of Roman civilization.

According to legend, it was here that Romulus marked the boundaries of the new city after killing his brother Remus, founding Rome in 753 BCE.

Palatine Hill holds the ruins of imperial palaces and is directly tied to the myth of the she-wolf who nursed the twins Romulus and Remus.

Today, visitors can walk among these remnants and feel the symbolic power of where it all began.

Mike’s top picks: The Turtle Fountain.

The Turtle Fountain (Fontana delle Tartarughe) in Rome’s Piazza Mattei is a Renaissance gem, designed by Giacomo della Porta and sculpted by Taddeo Landini between 1581 and 1588.

It features four bronze youths lifting dolphins, with turtles added during a 1658 restoration, likely by Bernini or Andrea Sacchi, to enhance the composition.

A popular legend tells of Duke Muzio Mattei, who, after losing his fortune, commissioned the fountain overnight to impress his fiancée’s father and secure their marriage. Though charming, this tale is historically inaccurate.

Originally intended for Piazza Giudea, the fountain was placed in front of the Mattei family’s residence, showcasing their influence.

The turtles have been stolen multiple times, leading to their replacement with replicas; the originals are now housed in the Capitoline Museums.

Ostia Antica : Visit the hidden Roman city with Mike!

Ostia Antica is a stunningly preserved ancient Roman city—one of the best in Italy.

With you English Mother-Tongue guide, we will bring the ancient city to life as we pick our way through 2000-year-old apartment complexes, visit a bygone restaurant, and learn about bizarre religious cults. Why Ostia Antica instead of Pompeii?

There are three reasons, 1) Ostia it’s much closer and easier to visit (25-minute train ride); 2) Ostia is a better example of a real, working class town than Pompeii; 3) visiting Ostia has a lower carbon footprint than visiting Pompeii, and given the crowds at the latter and general “undiscovered” feeling of the former, it’s a more enjoyable, enriching experience.

We begin our Ostia Antica Tour in Rome, at Piramide Metro B station, with a short 25 minutes train ride toward the Mediterranean sea. Along the way, I will discuss the regional geography of the area, Ostia’s role as Rome’s port, and the historic background leading up to the town’s rise in the Imperial era.

On site, we will spend 2,5 hours combing through the ruins, which include some of the best examples of baths, a fantastic amphitheater, and several Mithraic temples, not to mention a forum with temples.

Il Goccetto in Centro Storico @thereal_ilgoccetto is one of Rome’s best-known wine bars, with a fantastic selection of natural and regional wines.

It has a cozy atmosphere inside a 17th-century building, perfect for a relaxed evening.

Try: A glass of Lazio’s Cesanese red with a plate of cured meats and cheeses.

A fascinating curiosity about the selection of the pope in the Vatican involves the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.

During the conclave, the cardinals vote in secret, and after each vote, the ballots are burned in two cast iron stoves inside the chapel. The color of the smoke that rises from the chimney indicates the outcome: black smoke means no candidate has been elected; white smoke announces that a new pope has been chosen.

To ensure the color of the smoke is clearly distinguishable, specific chemicals are added to the burned ballots. For example, white smoke is produced by adding potassium chlorate, lactose, and pine resin, while black smoke results from burning potassium perchlorate, anthracene, and sulfur. This system has been refined over time to avoid confusion, such as in previous conclaves.

Additionally, after the election, the new pope retreats to what is called the Room of Tears, a small chamber next to the Sistine Chapel. There, he puts on the papal vestments for the first time, which are available in three sizes—symbolizing humility and the weight of responsibility assumed by the new pontiff.

These rituals and symbols reflect the tradition and mystery surrounding the election of the leader of the Catholic Church.

The Ludus Magnus was ancient Rome’s largest and most prestigious gladiator training school, constructed by Emperor Domitian between 81 and 96 AD.

Strategically located just east of the Colosseum, it was connected to the amphitheater via an underground tunnel, allowing gladiators to move directly from their training grounds to the arena.

The complex featured a central training arena measuring approximately 63 by 42 meters, surrounded by spectator stands that could accommodate up to 3,000 people. This setup allowed the public to watch gladiators practice, offering a preview of the spectacles to come.

Gladiators were trained under the supervision of a lanist (manager) and doctores (trainers), focusing on various combat techniques tailored to their assigned fighting styles. Their rigorous regimen included physical conditioning, weapon training, and performance skills to captivate audiences.

Today, the remains of the Ludus Magnus can be visited near the Colosseum, offering a glimpse into the lives of the warriors who once trained there. On spring, you can also see poppies in bloom.
